engine question

Here's a technical question--can anyone explain the difference between air-cooled, air/oil-cooled and liquid-cooled? How important is it in a working ATV (as opposed to a sport/trail riding, high speed type?) I'm still researching utility ATVs...leaning toward Yamaha +/or Polaris for my needs...torque not speed. Thanks all! Susan

used ATV advice

Hey, If you were looking for a utility ATV to use on a farm, no trailriding, just a dependable workhorse for hauling & towing, and you came across a '04 Polaris Sportsman 500 with 4900 miles on it, would you buy it? (Assuming you were confident it had been used appropriately and well maintained.) Or is that too many miles? Is 4900 mi. considered super high mileage? Just want thumbs up or down for now, will consider price separately... Any thoughts/advice highly appreciated, no fighting please! Susan in VA

RE: farm ATV

Does anyone here remember the old Cheech & Chong comedy routine about the substitute teacher with a room full of unruly students? Teacher; "class...class...." (finally screams) "SHUT UP!!!" I feel kinda like that teacher...could you all stop fussin for a minute? I'm looking at a Suzuki Eiger 400 which doesn't have fuel injection but does have the super low gear option which the Rancher does not. What do you all think of the Eiger? Which one will get me up the hill every time without fail? No mud, water or snow...I know it's boring but that's all I want. Grey Grizz, can you help me out here? Thanks to all, Susan

RE: farm ATV

I ain't skeered...just think some people are acting a little silly... I looked at a 2007 Suzuki Eiger 400 4X4 for $4200---would that do the job? the salesmen will say anything and your expert opinions are INCREDIBLY helpful... Will definitely look into the Rancher 420. thanks again! Susan

RE: farm ATV

Thanks for the input! As far as the Rancher, I read a review of the Rancher 400 that said it wasn't good on hills--"hill climbers will be disappointed" it said. I need one that can get my mower up that d--- hill! Are there any brands that are known to be strong on hillclimbing? Do you think a 400 cc would do it or do I need a 500? I appreciate any guidance!! Thanks to all, Susan

farm ATV

Hello all! I am another first-timer and never thought I would be an ATV owner, but am looking for one for my farm. I need one that I can count on to pull a mower (400 lbs) uphill and across ditches without getting stuck. I'm not interested in speed and won't be crossing any creeks or mud...I'm thinking about a 400-500 cc with 4WD...my question is, do I need a locking differential or would anti-slip in front be enough? Also how important would the low gear option be? The hill is steep, about a 45 degree slope (seems steep to me anyway). There's a lot to learn and I have already learned a lot from reading this forum. Thanks in advance for your advice! Susan in VA
